Sandton Library

View Project

Sandton Library is part of the Sandton Square (now Mandela Square) complex. Sandton Square is a mixed use development surrounding a major public open “piazza”. The development consists of shops, offices, restaurants, the Michelangelo Hotel, a theatre and residential units. It is connected to and part of the Sandton City shopping complex. The open “piazza” is the focus of the development in which events occur on a regular basis. The square is surrounded by restaurants with seating overlooking the square.

The Library is located on the east end of the square and includes a multi storey library around a central atrium and an adjacent single storey art gallery. There are two entrances to the library one from the square and one from the parking on the east. A ramp and lift connects all levels of the library. The building also includes the Council Chamber and associated offices for the Sandton Municipality and is linked to the adjacent civic office building. This building received a Merit Award from the Institute of SA Architects and an award from the Steel Institute for the ramp and roof design.
