View Project

Early in 1995 Cape Town accepted the invitation to host the qualifying tournament for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Women's Hockey. Less than 10 months was available to complete the design documentation, tender process and construction of a new facility which includes a synthetic hockey pitch and a new stadium to seat 2 000 spectators with change rooms, offices and reception rooms below.

The stadium has Devils Peak as a spectacular background, but is situated on soft ground conditions close to the Liesbeeck River. In spite of the very tight budget, the project also included a new landscaping design to enhance the visual appearance of the whole area and the first use of true tensile fabric roof structure of this scale in Southern Africa.

These facilities were to be planned within the framework of a  masterplan for further works necessary to host the Olympic Hockey tournament in 2004.
