Originally a vital route to the fishing harbour, High Street transformed over time into a delightful blend of art galleries and cozy spots. An essential upgrade to the stormwater system paved the way for a significant makeover, shifting the street from a car-dominated space to an inviting, pedestrian-friendly haven adorned with trees, traditional stone walls, and an adaptable event area.
In 2021, Hermanus High Street bloomed anew, thanks to GAPP, @Element Consulting Engineers, and the Overstrand Municipality Municipality. The collaborative effort tackled flooding issues and created a serene space for pedestrians. Meticulously designed pathways, greenery, benches, and sustainable shade structures revitalised the once-quiet street, earning the project the ILASA – The @Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa Awards of Excellence 2022 Certificate of Commendation.
The revitalisation aimed to create a shared street accommodating both pedestrians and mixed traffic, fostering a vibrant atmosphere. Thoughtful landscaping now offers safety, shelter, seating, and radiant illumination, inviting locals and visitors to linger and enjoy the ambiance.
High Street’s rejuvenation balanced traffic flow with designated parking and loading zones while preserving its cherished heritage character. This heartfelt revival beautifully marries history and modernity, offering a promising tomorrow.
