Conceptualised by GAPP Architects, in collaboration with interior design teams HK Studios and Cecile and Boyd, the lodge forms part of a bold undertaking by Singita to conserve and uplift the gorilla population in Rwanda. For this reason, all parts of the project – including landscape, architecture, engineering and interiors – were designed according to a strict set of eco-conscious building guidelines set out by the One Planet Council.

This 5-year endeavour not only sought to benefit the local ecosystem, but also to the community. With over 500 local artisans and builders employed during the construction period, most of the building components were made on site using locally sourced materials. These include the woven bamboo ceilings, volcanic stone walls and eucalyptus screens.

With the awe-inspiring views of the volcanoes coupled with the fresh, pared-back modernity and splashes of colour of the lodge, the effect is startling yet soothing, captivating yet calming.
