V&A Waterfront

Project Details

  • City: Cape Town, South Africa
  • Year: 2008
  • Client: V&A Waterfront Company
  • Value: R11 billion
  • Discipline: Urban Design
  • Sector: Mixed-use development, Waterfronts

GAPP transformed a working harbour with creative and visionary design, into a tourism hotspot, without disrupting the activities of the original working harbour, fishing industry, Port Authority and related land and marine infrastructure.

The waterfront development began in 1988 and is today one of South Africa’s most important tourist destinations, hosting over 24 million visitors annually.

GAPP’s mandate was to ensure that the commercial and tourism needs of the project were harmoniously accommodated. This integrated approach to urban design and architectural sensitivity resulted in the co-existence of both tourism and commercial facilities within a relaxed, yet busy environment that clearly excites the purpose of such divergent needs.
