The Integrated Sustainable Development Plan (ISDP) for Kokstad was commissioned by the Development Bank of South Africa and the Greater Kokstad Municipality (GKM).

The plan was prepared over a year by a multi-disciplinary team of urban designers, planners, architects, engineers, environmentalists and transport planners and through engagement and collaboration with officials, politicians and community organisations. The project included the evaluation of the proposals in terms of implications for ecosystem services and municipal finances.

Monitoring and evaluation were integral to the process with the establishment of project outcomes and indicators as a basis for measuring implementation. This established a basis for interdepartmental communication and implementation and the evaluation of outcomes through an annual sustainability report.

Funding applications were made to the South African Green fund for the implementation of key projects such as the “Green Heart Park” and the regeneration of the moribund industrial area into an Eco-Industrial Park.
